Most of the products you that you see advertised as ferrocerium are not the true alloy as it was originally invented. The true European alloy is the original and still works the best. 

These made in Montana fire starters feature true European ferrocerium on one side and magnesium alloy on the other side. The magnesium can be scraped off into a pile and when sparks are applied to it from the ferro side it will burn with intense heat even when wet.
